Workshop 2.2

Multiplication and Division

Summary:

Within this module we shall explore the operations of multiplication and division. I shall provide an introduction to early development in order to demonstrate where misunderstandings set in. The approach taken will be hands-on, providing practical activities to support the learning theories. If required, decimals, fractions and percentages can also be looked at during this module, always within a practical context.

Overview:

  • Understanding multiplication as repeated addition and arrays
  • Understanding division as repeated subtraction and sharing
  • Comparing strategies and effective approaches to calculating
  • Factors and multiples
  • Decimals, fractions and percentages

Key Message:

The development of mathematical concepts such as multiplication and division are often misunderstood or learnt through rote proceedures. It is important that children are given opportunities for understanding the principles which underpin the operations through using practical resources and manipulatives.

Suitable for:

KS1/ KS2 Teachers, Teachers of pupils with SEN, SENCOs, TA's, HLTAs, Numeracy Co-ordinators, EYPS, parents
