Within this module I explore the concept of counting across the key stages and its role within mathematical development. I explore how counting provides just one strategy for calculating and the aim should be to develop a bank of strategies within the child for flexible thinking.
The role of every day counting is essential within thewider context of open-ended activities for embedding mathematical knowledge. However, there are a number of inherent difficulties in relying heavily upon counting as the main technique for calculating and hence children should be taught how to use their counting skills to derive numbers as early as possible.
