In December 2010 the government announced it would be providing additional funds in the form of a 'Pupil Premium' for any child who is currently registered for Free School Meals entitlement. The Premium is worth a fixed sum of £430 pa per child and can be used in a number of ways by the school.

You may be eligible for Free School Meals if you receive one of the following support payments:
  • Income Support
  • Income Based job seekers Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance (Income Related) (ESA)
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit providing you do not also receive Working Tax Credit and you do not have an annual income of more than £16190

If you think you may be elligible for Free School Meals then you can apply through your child's school or your Local Authority.

Your child will not only be eligible for free school meals now (in addition to other benefits such as help with school visits), but additional funding will be provided to your child's school to support his or her education through the Pupil Premium when it is introduced in April. This funding can be used for a range of additional support including one-to-one tuition, detailed assessments, additional therapy groups such as movement and co-ordination groups or speech therapy support, or anything which the schools assesses as beneficial for improving the education and attainment of your child.

Further detail about how the funding can be used is expected to be released in the near future.
